“We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It’s the best deal man has ever made.”
- M. Facklam
“There is no secret so close as that between a rider and his horse.”
- Robert Smith Surtees
Another passion of Lorie’s is horse riding. At least a few times a week, she and her personable 8-year-old Appaloosa, Levi, hit the trails or enjoy training workouts in the arena. Lorie's first horse, Star, an Arabian/Quarter Horse, passed away in 2006 at age 29. Star taught Lorie how to trust her instincts in the saddle and appreciate the world from a horse's point of view...he is missed every day.
New Beginnings for Animals
www.greatpets.org
Lorie is an active volunteer with the non-profit group, New Beginnings for Animals, working to help save adoptable dogs and cats whose time is up in California’s overcrowded, high-kill shelters. The organization has saved thousands of dogs and cats of all breeds, providing them with medical treatment, spaying/neutering and foster care until they can be adopted into permanent homes.
In addition to Lorie's own rescued dogs, her guest bedroom is usually filled with puppies as they become healthy and ready for adoption into their new, permanent homes.

With over 70 participating sponsors and vendors and over 500 attendees, it's one of the city's most popular events, raising over $15,000 for the animals every year.

In her free time, Lorie can usually be found hanging out with four-legged friends! Animals and their welfare are a big part of her life and she works with a number of non-profit organizations to rescue and rehabilitate neglected, unwanted animals that have been abandoned on the streets or in shelters. Lorie also actively fundraises to help pay for expenses involved with rescuing animals and giving them needed medical care.
